Small Group Intensives Focused on Soloing
"In just a short time Rik has ushered me into the world of guitar, helped me better understand music theory, and even managed to teach this old dog some new tricks. He makes complex ideas accessible, and his teaching methods complement
your strengths while shoring up your weaknesses ~ Ramon
Individual instruction is, of course, always the best approach
when learning a musical instrument, especially one as complex as the guitar. At some stage though students, particularly electric players, will benefit from learning in a small group setting,
putting new found soloing skills to the test.
Many of the players I work with have expressed an interest in
one day playing live in a band, or at an open mic, or at jam sessions with friends. The skills needed to break out into fluid, sustained soloing over a given progression are exactly what we
address in Guitar Labs & the acoustic Blues Club.
A Lab is like a structured jam session. Participants take turns soloing
using a given scale that we've been working with during lessons. Participants keep the song in motion through rhythm work
until it's their turn to solo. I'll often support with bass
and simulated drums. It takes a lot of focus but is ultimately
rewarding. Groups bond and grow as a cohort.
Playing live there's always a lot to hold in your head in terms of phrasing, technique, rhythm work, not to mention scale positions up and down the neck. Guitar Labs are designed to give learners
the real world playing experience that's inherently
missing from individual instruction. What could be more fun?
